Monet’s Garden

Claude Monet (November 14, 1840 – December 5, 1926), a French painter and one of the representatives and founders of Impressionism. The term "Impressionism" comes from the title of his masterpiece Impression, Sunrise. Monet’s Garden is situated in the town of Giverny, 70 kilometers west of Paris, France. It was the residence of the famous French painter Monet, divided into a water garden and a flower garden. In late April 1883, the painter Monet passed through the town by train and was deeply attracted by its tranquil atmosphere, so he decided to settle there until his death in 1926.

After purchasing the house, Monet carried out extensive renovations. Being passionate about flowers and plants, he cut down the pine trees in front of the gate, built a greenhouse, and cultivated various blooms. In 1914, Monet constructed a large studio in his yard, measuring 23 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and 5 meters in height, where he created the large decorative painting series Water Lilies. During his reclusive life here, his influence grew steadily, making him not only the father of Impressionism but also a pioneer of modern painting.

Monet’s garden, also known as the Normandy Garden, is located in front of the house. It is rectangular in shape and covers an area of about one hectare. Originally a vegetable and fruit garden, the water garden is an artificial pond lined with weeping willows and bamboo forests. Towering trees, winding paths, and several small green bridges arching over the mirror-like pool reflect strong influences from Japanese garden design, evoking a meditative and serene feeling. The bridge and water lilies in the water garden served as the prototypes for Monet’s Japanese Bridge series and Water Lilies series of artworks.
