Giverny Impressionist Art Museum

The American Art Museum was renamed the Giverny Impressionist Art Museum in 2009. It is located in the famous village of Giverny in France's Upper Normandy region, which is renowned worldwide for being home to Claude Monet’s residence and his enchanting gardens.

Claude Monet was one of the leading figures and founders of the Impressionist movement. Following Monet, from 1887 until the early 20th century, a large number of painters (over a hundred in total), most of them American, were drawn to Giverny’s tranquility and scenic beauty and moved there, turning the village into a true artists' colony. In 1992, American entrepreneur and collector Daniel J. Terra built the American Art Museum in the village, featuring works by American Impressionist painters who lived there around the turn of the 20th century. Today, the museum is primarily dedicated to the history and development of Impressionist art in the Giverny art scene, making it the best place to explore Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
