Le Havre

Le Havre is located at the mouth of the Seine River, bordering the English Channel. It is the second-largest city in the Normandy region of northern France after Rouen and is known for its vital role as the “port of Paris” in maritime transport, giving it a distinctive place in the French economy. The city is France’s second-largest export port after Marseille, and ranks first in France in container freight volume.

During World War II, Le Havre suffered heavy bombing by the Allied forces, resulting in the loss of many precious historic buildings. What remains are treasures and rare heritage of the city. The rebuilt city of Le Havre, led by architect Auguste Perret, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The city boasts numerous religious structures, including Le Havre Cathedral, St. Joseph’s Church, St. Michael’s Church, St. Vincent’s Church, St. François Church, St. Anne’s Church, Notre-Dame Church, and the Graville Abbey. Among them, St. Joseph’s Church is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, featuring a bell tower that rises 106 meters high, making it one of the tallest in France.

The museums of Le Havre are also not to be missed, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Old Le Havre, and the Natural History Museum. The Museum of Fine Arts houses artworks from the past five centuries, including pieces by Monet and other artists who lived or worked in Normandy.
