St. Thomas Church Leipzig

St. Thomas Church is located in Leipzig, Germany, and is a Lutheran church. It is most famous for being the long-time choir director of this church, and his remains are also buried here.

The history of St. Thomas Church dates back to the 12th century. Between 1492 and 1496, the church was built in the late Gothic style. On Pentecost Sunday in 1539, the leader of the Reformation, Martin Luther, preached here. For over 800 years since then, St. Thomas Church has stood in this location, welcoming visitors from around the world. The church’s bell tower was first constructed in 1537 and was later rebuilt in 1702. It now reaches a height of 68 meters and houses four large bells, the largest of which has a diameter of 2.04 meters and weighs approximately 5,200 kilograms. This bell is only rung on significant occasions.

The renowned German composer Johann Sebastian Bach served as the choir director of St. Thomas Church from 1723 until his death in 1750, spending the majority of his life at the church. To honor his contributions, a statue of him was erected next to the church in 1908.
