The Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig was founded in 1848. Since the end of 2004, the museum has been located at its new site on Sachsenplatz. It is one of the oldest and most important privately funded collections in Germany and also a vibrant hub for contemporary art.

Most of the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig’s collection comes from gifts and bequests by art-loving citizens, many of whom were merchants and intellectuals. Thanks to their support, Leipzig today boasts such a wealth of unique artistic treasures. Visitors can learn about these families during their visit and, with a guided tour, explore their former collections. The museum’s exhibition space covers around 5,000 square meters across four floors, showcasing a collection of paintings and sculptures, as well as a dedicated area for rotating exhibitions.

The Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig houses over 3,000 paintings dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, approximately 850 sculptures, a library with 60,000 volumes, and more than 55,000 prints, including world-renowned works by artists such as Cranach, Hals, Friedrich, Beckmann, and Klinger. The focus of the museum’s exhibitions includes early 17th-century German, Italian, and Dutch paintings collected since 1837, 19th- and 20th-century German art, and its print collection, offering visitors an exciting journey through art.
