Liuhe Village Catholic Church

Liuhe Village in Qingxu County, Taiyuan, Shanxi, is the largest Catholic settlement in mainland China. With a population of over 8,000, most residents have practiced the faith for generations, with family traditions dating back to the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty—over 300 years ago.

In 1980, the Taiyuan Diocese was reorganized along administrative lines, establishing the Qingxu Parish within Qingxu County. In 1985, villagers of Liuhe Village raised 400,000 yuan to rebuild the church. A year later, a 40-meter-tall landmark structure was completed, making Qingxu one of the first dioceses in Shanxi to resume activities after the reform and opening-up period. The church was further expanded in 2006, becoming even more iconic.
