Revolution Square

Revolution Square is located in Havana, the capital of Cuba. It is both a square and an autonomous municipality with a population density of 13,469.3 people per square kilometer. Originally named Civic Square, it was renamed Revolution Square after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

The Revolution Square district extends from the square to the Malecón and all the way to the sea, covering an area of 72,000 square meters, making it one of the largest squares in the world. In the square stands the José Martí Memorial, which rises 109 meters high and is one of the highest points in Havana. Behind the memorial is the former office of Cuban President Fidel Castro. Across from it is the iconic image of Che Guevara (Spanish: Che Guevara), accompanied by the slogan “Hasta la Victoria Siempre” (“Ever Onward to Victory”) that points toward the Ministry of the Interior building. The square is surrounded by the National Library and numerous government institutions.

Revolution Square has been the site of many significant political events in Cuba and is also a location where Fidel Castro and other political figures frequently delivered speeches. Fidel Castro addressed more than one million Cubans on multiple important occasions here, typically on May 1st or July 26th each year.
