Cuban Capitol Building

The Cuban Capitol Building is located in the capital city of Havana and served as the government office building of Cuba before 1959. It now houses the Cuban Academy of Sciences. The Capitol Building is one of the most magnificent structures in Cuba, and the statue inside it is the third tallest indoor statue in the world.

The Capitol Building was completed in 1929 and features an overall neoclassical architectural style. Its exterior closely resembles the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., but its architect, Eugenio Raynieri, stated that the inspiration for the building’s dome came from the famous Panthéon in Paris, France, the resting place of many notable cultural figures. The dome, constructed with a steel frame and clad in stone, was built in the United States and later imported to Cuba. It stands 92 meters high and was the tallest building in Havana until the 1950s. The interior of the building is elegantly and luxuriously decorated, exuding grandeur. Outside, there are several beautiful French-style gardens with lush green lawns and blooming flowers. The Capitol Building and the gardens complement each other, creating a picturesque scene.
