Cespedes Square

Cespedes Square, also known as Arms Square, officially named Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Square, is one of the most liberal squares in Cuba. In the center of the square stands a statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the "Father of the Homeland" and a hero of Cuba's struggle against Spanish colonial rule for independence, as well as a marble bust of Perucho Figueredo, a renowned Cuban patriot and revolutionary.

In 1868, while participating in the Battle of Bayamo, Perucho Figueredo wrote the lyrics and composed the music for Cuba’s national anthem, "La Bayamesa." He was executed by Spanish colonial forces in 1870, and the words to the national anthem are inscribed on the pedestal of his bust. Cespedes Square boasts a pleasant environment with numerous marble benches where visitors can rest. Locals also enjoy spending their leisure time here. Not far to the east of the square lies the City Hall, in front of which Carlos Manuel de Céspedes proclaimed Cuban independence in 1868.
