Edmonton Valley Zoo

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is located in a valley in Edmonton, Alberta, and opened in 1959. It is home to over 350 animals from more than 100 species, making it one of the most popular zoos in Alberta. It is open 364 days a year from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, except on Christmas Day.

The zoo offers visitors a glimpse into the homes of wild animals, categorized by species into mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. Visitors can explore areas such as the African Savannah, Small Animal Paddocks, Birds of Prey exhibit, Carnivore Habitat, and Elephant House. The African Savannah is home to species like the scimitar-horned oryx and Grevy’s zebra. The Birds of Prey area houses bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and snowcocks, while the small paddocks include Bactrian camels, Caucasian tur, llamas, bighorn sheep, and Sichuan takin.

One of the most interesting stories is about Boris, a Siberian tiger from the Granby Zoo. Zoo staff discovered that Boris, who grew up in Quebec, did not respond to commands in English but was highly sensitive to French. Since most residents of Quebec speak French, Boris didn’t react to his keeper’s English instructions. As a result, the zoo assigned a French-speaking keeper to care for him.
