Attraction Introduction

Located in the center of Larnaca, St. Lazarus Church is regarded as one of the most treasured cultural heritage sites in Larnaca and Cyprus. Legend has it that after Lazarus was resurrected by Christ in Israel, he came to Cyprus, where he served as a bishop for more than 30 years and was later buried in this church. His underground tomb is remarkably well-preserved and can be visited.

St. Lazarus Church still houses many precious religious paintings. Many weddings are held here on weekends, so it's best to visit on weekdays. The adjacent Byzantine Museum also displays artifacts related to the church.

The church was rebuilt in the 17th century while retaining its original features. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the area around the church was home to the tombs of Europeans living in Larnaca. During the seven days leading up to Easter, statues of St. Lazarus can be seen throughout the city of Larnaca.
