Shwezigon Pagoda

Shwezigon Pagoda was first built in the 11th century. The initial construction was carried out by King Anawrahta (1044–1077), who was the first to promote Theravāda Buddhism in Myanmar and a leading figure in the large-scale development of Bagan. The pagoda was largely completed around 1086 to 1090 under King Kyanzittha (1084–1113), Anawrahta’s successor. Known as the greatest king of Bagan and a prolific builder, Kyanzittha ordered the construction of countless stupas, transforming Bagan into the “City of 4 Million Pagodas.”

Shwezigon Pagoda is one of the most significant structures in the history of religious architecture in Myanmar. Many stupas across the country were modeled after it, and it played a crucial role in shaping the relationship between traditional Burmese religion and Theravāda Buddhism. Standing over 40 meters tall, the pagoda features a bronze pavilion on each of its four sides, each housing an exquisitely crafted standing Buddha. Its spire rises high and is richly adorned, surrounded by numerous smaller stupas and pavilions. Among them, a hall known as the “37 Nats” is especially popular with visitors. Legend has it that King Anawrahta placed 37 statues representing Myanmar’s spiritual nat figures at the base of the pagoda. Later, these statues were moved to a small hall on the southeastern platform and named the “37 Nats.” This nat hall is now an important pilgrimage site for locals and is also open to tourists, though the original statues have long been stolen and replaced with newer recreations.
