Shwesandaw Pagoda is a Buddhist stupa located in Bagan, Mandalay Region. Built in 1057 by King Anawrahta, it stands about eight stories tall and is renowned worldwide for its spectacular sunset views, attracting visitors from all over the globe who hope to witness the stunning sight of the pagoda silhouetted against the vibrant hues of the setting sun.

Climbing to the top of Shwesandaw Pagoda to watch the sunset involves ascending extremely steep stone steps that are almost vertical. The climb is made barefoot, adding a sense of spiritual devotion and challenge. Although an iron railing runs along the side, you still need to proceed with caution—any misstep could lead to a fall. Once at the summit, you’ll find the platform crowded with people from various countries, creating a magnificent scene as everyone eagerly awaits the sunset. Looking out, the vast plains stretch endlessly, swept by the wind, while the winding Irrawaddy River meanders through the landscape, reflecting the colors of the sunset. Thousands of stupas are bathed in the golden glow, casting long shadows across the green fields—like a gentle dance of life, quietly coming alive.
