Dhamma Ya Zedi Pagoda

Dhamma Ya Zedi Pagoda is located in a small village in the eastern part of Bagan and was built in 1196 as a renowned stupa. Unlike other pagodas in Bagan, which are typically square-shaped, Dhamma Ya Zedi features a pentagonal base. Delicate Buddha statues also stand at each corner of the stupa.

It is said that in 1197, King Narapatisithu of Bagan received four sacred Buddhist relics from the King of Sri Lanka. To better preserve and protect these precious items, the sanctuary was constructed in 1198 to house the relics. The pagoda is built from bricks, with reddish-brown tiles adorned with scenes from the Jataka tales. Surrounded by lush trees and blooming flowers, Dhamma Ya Zedi is not easy to climb—only after considerable effort can visitors reach the top to enjoy an unobstructed view of Bagan’s religious architectural complex.
