Arch of Hadrian

Introduction In 129 AD, to welcome the visit of Roman Emperor Hadrian, the people of Jerash specially built a magnificent triumphal arch in the southern part of the city, naming it the "Arch of Hadrian" and holding large-scale celebrations. The intention of the architectural planners was to use it as the city's southern gate to expand the size and scale of Jerash, but later this expansion project was not realized, so the arch has stood alone outside the city for over 1,800 years. Only a hippodrome in the open space between the arch and the old city serves to connect it with the city.
