Umm Qais, anciently known as Gadara, overlooks the scenic Yarmouk Valley and the Golan Heights. Perhaps it was this reason that attracted the Greeks to establish the earliest city of Gadara here. The Roman era marked the peak of Gadara’s prosperity—not only did the city flourish, but it also became a cultural hub of Jordan. The best-preserved structure in the city is the cathedral built in the 6th century, along with three Roman bathhouses and three theaters. Approximately one kilometer north, in the area called Al-Hisma, there is another privately operated upscale thermal bath.

Today, Umm Qais has become a popular tourist destination, located just 110 kilometers south of Jordan’s capital, Amman. Its popularity is not only due to its numerous historical ruins but also because it sits high in the northwestern mountains of Jordan, offering breathtaking views of the Sea of Galilee, Lake Tiberias, and the surrounding landscapes of Israel.
