Shaumari Nature Reserve

Introduction: Due to the over-extraction of groundwater from the Azraq Oasis to supply water to Amman and Irbid, the natural environment was severely damaged, resulting in the disappearance of about 280 species. In 1975, the Jordanian government established the Shaumari Nature Reserve, introducing many species that were or had become extinct in the Jordanian desert, such as gazelles, ostriches, and wild asses, gradually transitioning them from captivity to natural habitat. Near the Shaumari Nature Reserve, the Azraq Wetland Reserve has also been established. Located in the marshy area of the oasis, it serves as a resting spot for migratory birds. Transportation: 10 km southeast of Azraq.
