Buddha Park

Buddha Park is located on the banks of the Mekong River in the southeastern part of the capital Vientiane. It is a sculpture park and one of the most famous tourist attractions in Vientiane. Due to the many religious statues in the park, it is also known as Xieng Khuan, meaning "City of Spirit."

Buddha Park was built in 1958 by the master Bunleua Sulilat. He blended Hinduism and Buddhism, and projected his philosophies into the park, which includes depictions of Shiva, Vishnu, Arjuna, Guanyin, the Buddha, and virtually every imaginable deity from Hindu or Buddhist traditions. In addition to these statues, the park also features a fantastic three-tiered tower-like structure that resembles a giant pumpkin. The interior has three levels representing Hell, Earth, and Heaven, with carvings on the walls of each level symbolizing the realm it represents. The top level houses a golden Buddha, signifying arrival in Heaven.

In 1975, due to conflicts between Bunleua Sulilat’s communist beliefs and the then prevailing left-wing nationalist group in Laos—the Pathet Lao—he fled to Vietnam and established another sculpture park in Nong Khai, Vietnam, which stands in symbolic contrast to Buddha Park.
