The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is located on an artificial island just off the coast of Qatar’s capital city. Covering an area of 45,000 square meters, it is the most comprehensive museum dedicated to Islamic art to date. The exterior walls are built from white limestone blocks that reflect off the azure sea, creating an awe-inspiring sense of grandeur; meanwhile, close inspection of the architectural details—such as the classic Islamic geometric patterns and traditional Arabic arched windows—adds a touch of softness to this massive structure, slightly tempering its imposing aura.

Beneath the museum’s vast silver-domed atrium, 150-foot-high glass walls line the space, offering views of the blue sea and golden sands. The museum houses a diverse collection of Islamic artworks from around the world, representing various cultures across three continents and spanning a period from the 7th to the 19th century. Among all the exhibits, the most prominent is a 9th-century white ceramic bowl from Iraq, inscribed with Kufic calligraphy in cobalt blue; the rarest and most exceptional item is a 14th or 15th-century red silk carpet known as the Timurid Chessboard Garden Carpet, a cherished object of the chess-loving Islamic ruler Timur, and incredibly precious and rare.
