Rolous Group

Guide Location: 12 km east of Siem Reap. Construction period: Late 9th century. Religion: Hinduism.   Highlights: Bakong Temple: The largest and most important temple in the Rolous Group, it was once a major city-center shrine used to worship the lingam. Its architectural style is similar to that of Indonesia's Borobudur.

Preah Ko Temple: The second most important structure in the Rolous Group, dedicated to Shiva and the ancestors of the kings. The architectural style of Banteay Srei was inherited and developed based on that of Preah Ko.

Lolei Temple: Built on a small island in the center of the Rolous Group’s first artificial reservoir in Khmer history, Lolei Pond (now dried up). It is the last major temple before King Yasovarman I moved the capital to Angkor, and was dedicated to the Shiva lingam.   Introduction: The Rolous temples are regarded as the beginning of Khmer art. Yasovarman I, the founder of the Angkorian dynasty, established several capitals, with Rolous being the second. The Angkorian dynasty had its capital here for 70 years.
