West Mebon
Guide Location: Central island of the West Baray, just outside the western gate of Angkor Thom, approximately 11 km northwest of Siem Reap. Construction Period: Second half of the 11th century. Religion: Hinduism. Deity Worshipped: Vishnu.
West Mebon is situated on a small island in the center of the West Baray, one of Angkor’s most important hydraulic engineering projects and the largest artificial reservoir in the world. The temple once enshrined a bronze statue depicting Vishnu reclining in the cosmic ocean. The statue has since been moved to the National Museum in Phnom Penh.
Transportation: Boats are available at the southern dam of the West Baray to reach the island.
