One of the most important structures in Angkor, it is the best-preserved and most famous red sandstone temple, earning the titles "Jewel of Angkorian Heritage" and "Diamond of Khmer Art." The Angkor region in Cambodia is home to thousands of ancient ruins, among which stands a strikingly crimson-hued temple known as the "Citadel of Women." Located to the west of Siem Reap Province, this "Citadel of Women," originally named "Banteay Srei," translates from Khmer as "Citadel of Women" or more accurately, "Citadel of Joy." Locals commonly refer to it as the "Citadel of Women" due to the numerous statues of the goddess "Apsara" carved in the central part of the temple. Whether called "Banteay Srei" or "Citadel of Women," no matter the name, the brilliance emitted by this temple is indescribable. Built in 967 AD, Banteay Srei was later hidden in the jungle for centuries until 1914, when a Frenchman named Marcel discovered its traces again. The entire temple complex is divided by three concentric walls. The outermost wall features a processional causeway flanked by two small shrines on either side; the middle layer's outer edge is surrounded by a moat; while the innermost layer houses the main T-shaped sanctuary, in front of which stand two libraries. The true charm lies within the second enclosure.
