Introduction Mactan Island is world-renowned as the place where the navigator Ferdinand Magellan died. On April 27, 1521, after achieving success in his missionary work in Cebu, Magellan confidently set out to cross the Mactan Strait to Lapulapu to continue preaching Catholicism. However, upon his arrival, he was confronted and killed by the chieftain of Lapulapu and his warriors. In 1866, a monument was erected at the site of Magellan’s death to honor the great explorer. Nearby, there are also paintings depicting the events of that time, which are worth viewing.

The Lapulapu Monument, commemorating the same battle, is also located on Mactan Island. Built in the early 20th century, the monument features Lapulapu holding the weapon he used to fight Magellan, symbolizing the bravery of the Filipino people. The two monuments are just a hundred meters apart.
