Marcelo Fernan Bridge

Marcelo Fernan Bridge is located in Cebu City, Cebu Province, and spans the Mactan Strait, connecting Cebu City to Mactan Island. It was opened in 1999. The bridge was built to relieve the heavy traffic load on the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge, which had been struggling to cope with the growing demand for transport since its opening in 1972.

The Marcelo Fernan Bridge was constructed with the aid of the Japanese government and is named after a senator from Cebu City. It is an impressive concrete cable-stayed bridge. Stretching 1,237 meters in length with a maximum span of 185 meters, the bridge has four lanes in both directions and pedestrian walkways on both sides, making it the widest and longest-spanning bridge in the Philippines. The Marcelo Fernan Bridge is highly durable and has a strong impact resistance. Rubber fenders are installed on the main bridge piers to protect the structure from ship collisions.
