Introduction to the "Peshawar" Tourist Attractions Peshawar is the most ethnically distinctive city in Pakistan. Visiting Pakistan without seeing the famous tourist destination and military stronghold of Peshawar would be a great pity. Peshawar belongs to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and has a population of approximately 570,000. Peshawar was once designated as the capital of the Kushan Empire by King Kanishka I of Gandhara in 58 BC. Due to its location on multiple trade routes across Central Asia, the area has been a major trade hub between the South Asian subcontinent and Central Asia for centuries. The massive Sikh Fort faces the Khyber Pass in the Hindu Kush mountains, extending all the way to Peshawar city. Both historically and today, it is considered a significant military installation. The Khyber Pass, at an altitude of 1,100 meters and stretching 30 kilometers, is flanked by two mountain ranges and winds through the terrain, with the narrowest point being only 16 meters wide. Its strategic location made it a much-contested site, and historical invading forces entering the Indian subcontinent all passed through this pass. Remnants left by British regiments can still be seen today. Modern-day Peshawar continues to serve as a key trade corridor between Central and South Asia. In addition, Peshawar also has its own light industry. Textiles, shoe manufacturing, and pottery production are among its main economic pillars. Peshawar’s University Town is a hub for local academic institutions, including the University of Peshawar, the University of Agriculture Peshawar, and the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar. In recent years, numerous private universities have also been established in Peshawar. The residents of Peshawar can generally be divided into two groups: the local minority ethnic group, the Pishoris, who speak Hindko, and the Pashtuns, who make up the majority and come from Afghanistan. During the Afghan Civil War, Peshawar became the political center for the anti-Soviet mujahideen.
