Faisal Mosque is located at the foot of the Margalla Hills in the northern part of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Construction began in 1976 and took 10 years to complete. It is the national mosque of Pakistan and the largest mosque in the country.

The Faisal Mosque was funded by the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia as a gift to the people of Pakistan, hence both the mosque and the avenue leading to it are named after him. The Faisal Mosque is an outstanding example of modern Islamic architecture worldwide: while traditional mosques are typically dome-centric, this one has an octagonal shape. The entire complex consists of four 80-meter-high minarets (known as minarets), a prayer hall, a large courtyard, arcades, and more. The exterior is constructed from white marble, while the interior features mosaic decorations.

The main prayer hall is a large-span column-free tent-like structure made of reinforced concrete, with no internal columns—the entire weight is supported and borne by the four minarets. Covering an area of 5,000 square meters, the main prayer hall can accommodate 10,000 worshippers, making it the sixth-largest mosque in the world. It is not only a religious landmark but also one of Pakistan’s most famous tourist attractions.
