Palm Islands Nature Reserve

Established in 1992, the Palm Islands Nature Reserve is a protected area composed of three small islands, covering an area of 4.2 square kilometers, located northwest of Tripoli. The Palm Islands Nature Reserve is known as "the most unique reserve in the Mediterranean" and has been designated as an "Important Bird Area" by BirdLife International.

The largest island in the reserve is Palm Island, also known as Rabbit Island, due to the large population of rabbits that once lived there in the 20th century. The small Palm Island is home to over 600 palm trees, adding significant charm to the island. The Palm Islands Nature Reserve serves as a paradise for loggerhead turtles, monk seals, and migratory birds. The reserve’s beaches are important nesting sites for sea turtles, with large numbers of them coming each year to complete their vital reproductive tasks. Monk seals are also frequent visitors. Beneath the waves, rare sponges and a variety of fish swim and play freely. Some areas of the reserve allow visitors to swim and dive, but most parts remain preserved for the wildlife.
