Arz Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve

The Arz Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve covers an area of 550 square kilometers, making it Lebanon’s largest nature reserve and the country’s biggest protected cedar forest. It is also a significant bird sanctuary and an ecotourism destination. The reserve is home to 32 species of wild mammals, 200 species of birds, and 500 species of plants.

This is a renowned cedar sanctuary, where cedars grow abundantly. Cracking open a tiny black seed releases a refreshing wave of pine aroma that instantly invigorates the senses. Perhaps because they can only thrive at high altitudes and in the coldest climates within the country, cedars grow less than one-tenth of a meter every ten years. How many years of growth does it take for these towering cedars to become so lush? In the reserve, visitors can see clusters of young trees and stone monuments planted by staff in memory of soldiers who died in the civil war—symbols of their eternal remembrance and tribute to their great contributions to the nation. Tourists can also purchase two jars of expensive greenish-brown cedar honey from the small shop as a souvenir of their visit to the Arz Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve.
