Bekaa Valley

The Bekaa Valley is a valley located in the eastern part of Lebanon near the Syrian border, under the jurisdiction of the Beqaa Governorate. Historically, the Bekaa Valley has been a renowned strategic location and one of the cradles of ancient civilizations. It is the northernmost extension of the East African Rift, situated between the Lebanon Mountains about 30 kilometers east of Beirut, stretching 120 kilometers in length and approximately 16 kilometers in width.

The Bekaa Valley has a typical Mediterranean climate, with relatively limited rainfall due to the blocking effect of the Lebanon Mountains. As early as the 1st century BC, when it was under Roman rule, the Bekaa Valley was known as the granary of Syria. Today, the cultivated land in the Bekaa Valley accounts for 40% of all of Lebanon’s farmland. It is the largest agricultural region in Lebanon, with main crops including wheat, corn, and cotton. Its northern end, with limited rainfall, is primarily dedicated to animal husbandry, while the southern part features large-scale vineyards. Historically, the Bekaa Valley was once a center for opium production. After 1957, the Lebanese government built a series of water conservancy facilities in the Litani River basin, greatly boosting local agricultural development.
