Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a patch of clove forest inhabited by the endemic Balinese long-tailed monkeys. The local Balinese believe that monkeys are the descendants of the monkey god Hanuman and should be worshipped as deities. As a result, the monkeys here live carefree lives and are even fed by caretakers. It is said that monkeys used to frequently harass villagers and damage crops, so the locals built a temple (Pura Bukit Sari) in the forest to ward them off. This 17th-century temple is generally not open to the public, though the monkeys can come and go as they please.

Note: Visitors wearing glasses are advised to remove easily detachable items such as hats and glasses before entering the park, as some mischievous monkeys may snatch them.
