Bible Zoo

The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo covers an area of 64 hectares and is one of the few large zoos in the world situated close to a city and run non-governmentally. It houses extremely precious and endangered species such as red pandas and Egyptian vultures, and also boasts the greatest number of animals described in the Bible — hence the zoo’s name.

The zoo first opened in 1928 as a small children’s zoo on Harav Kook Street in central Jerusalem. It was founded by Aharon Shulov, one of the pioneers of the Department of Zoology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1950 to 1991 — over 41 years — the zoo became the most popular attraction in Jerusalem. Over time, due to the deterioration of the zoo's environment, it was forced to close for renovation in 1991. On February 28, 1993, a larger, more modern zoo reopened in the southwestern part of Jerusalem.

Today’s Jerusalem Biblical Zoo operates on an international scale, not only offering an elegant environment but also filled with the raw beauty of nature. In addition, the zoo is actively involved in animal care and educational activities, particularly those using animals to assist special-needs children through medical and other public welfare programs — efforts that leave a particularly deep impression.
