Carmel Mountains Human Evolution Sites: The Nahal Me’arot / Wadi el-Mughara cave complex is located in Israel on the western slopes of Mount Carmel. The Tabun, Jamal, el-Mughara, and Skhul caves situated deep within the valleys of the Nahal Me’arot (Nahal Me’arot) / Wadi el-Mughara (Wadi el-Mughara) cover an area of over 54 hectares. The site preserves cultural remains that illustrate human evolution over the past 500,000 years, including burials, early stone structures, and evidence of the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture and animal husbandry.

To date, this site is the only known cultural complex where fossils of both Neanderthals and early anatomically modern humans have been discovered, providing new evidence for discussions on the disappearance of the Neanderthals and the evolution of Homo sapiens. Ninety years of archaeological research conducted here have revealed previously unrecognized segments in the cultural timeline, offering valuable insights into early human life in Southwest Asia.
