Introduction Batang Ai Lake is about a five-hour drive from Kuching. Originally a vast expanse of forest, the area was transformed into an artificial lake during the construction of a hydroelectric power station. As a result, many former mountain peaks were submerged and turned into beautiful islands. Visitors here can enjoy views of tropical rainforests, pepper plantations, rubber estates, and border mountains. This area is home to the Iban people, and a distinctive local dwelling is the longhouse. The longhouse is a unique form of housing found in the tropical rainforests of Borneo. It has a high foundation and is usually quite large, often housing several families in a single elongated structure. Travelers can arrange longhouse stays through tour agencies. Bringing small gifts for the hosts when visiting or staying in a longhouse will be greatly appreciated. Transportation There is also a Hilton Resort longhouse available locally, which offers better facilities than traditional longhouses, with twin rooms priced at around 200 Malaysian Ringgit. A special bus service departs from Kuching to Batang Ai every morning at 8:00 AM, costing 50 Ringgit per person. The return bus from Batang Ai to Kuching leaves at 2:00 PM.
