Fort Margherita

Fort Margherita is an old castle built in 1879 by Charles Brooke, and is an important landmark and heritage site in the history of Sarawak. The castle is designed in British architectural style, and was constructed to protect Kuching from invaders. Since 1971, Fort Margherita has served as a police museum open to visitors, and is now a well-known tourist attraction.

The name Fort Margherita comes from the beloved wife of Brooke. The white-colored castle is located on a small hill, and its site was carefully chosen to be easily defensible. To guard against invasions, the fort was built solidly with three levels, surrounded by high walls, and topped with a watchtower. Its well-crafted architecture, thick walls, and sturdy wooden windows give it an impregnable appearance.

At night, Fort Margherita shines brilliantly under the lights, catching the eye. It stands like a bright beacon atop the hill, guiding the way.
