Sarawak Museum

The Sarawak Museum was established in 1888 and opened to the public in 1891. Its purpose is to collect and preserve the cultural artworks and handicrafts of Sarawak so that future generations can also appreciate them. The interior design of the museum was inspired by Norman-style mansions and has been praised as one of the best museums in Asia. The museum houses a wealth of anthropological materials from various ethnic groups in Borneo, as well as significant archaeological artifacts, and permanently exhibits indigenous art and handicrafts.

Many of the exhibits at the Sarawak Museum were donated by Alfred Russel Wallace. This naturalist, who co-discovered the theory of evolution with Darwin, spent a considerable amount of time in Borneo. The museum has an annex building that displays Chinese porcelain and features a gallery specifically dedicated to commemorating the diverse lifestyles of the many ethnic groups in the region. The first floor of the museum showcases Sarawak’s wildlife, including mammals, reptiles, and birds, while the second floor displays handicrafts from various ethnic groups, such as musical instruments, crafted items, and ship models.

The Sarawak Museum offers free admission and is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, except on Fridays. On Sundays and public holidays, it is open from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
