Atkinson Clock Tower

The Atkinson Clock Tower is located on Brace Hill in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Built in 1905, it was constructed to commemorate Francis George Atkinson, the first governor of Kota Kinabalu.

When the British first arrived here to establish a colony, tropical diseases were among the many challenges they faced. At the age of 28, Francis George Atkinson tragically passed away from malaria. His mother, Mary Edith, built this clock tower on Brace Hill in 1905 in memory of her son who died at such a young age. The Atkinson Clock Tower is one of the oldest buildings in Kota Kinabalu. Made of wooden planks, it has a square shape and stands 15.24 meters tall, presenting a magnificent sight. From its completion until 1956, the clock tower served as a navigational aid for ships entering the port. It has become a renowned maritime landmark and can be admired from the sea in all its elegant glory.

The Atkinson Clock Tower is the only building that survived the Allied bombings in 1945. Due to its age, the wooden planks used in its construction had deteriorated over time. In 1961, the planks were replaced, but the original structure and appearance of the building have been remarkably well preserved.
