The Kinabatangan River is located in Sabah, Malaysia. Stretching 560 kilometers, it is the second longest river in the country and is highly favored for the diverse wildlife living along its banks.

The Kinabatangan River is the most spectacular river in Sabah. Its long, winding waters nurture expansive tropical virgin rainforests, and the rich ecological environment supports a wide variety of rare wildlife. Along its extensive banks, you can find dense forests and wetlands such as dryland dipterocarp forests, freshwater swamp forests, and mangrove swamps. Beyond the forests and wetlands, you can also explore limestone caves on Mount Gomantong and oxbow lakes. The Kinabatangan River fosters one of the world’s richest ecosystems and biological chains. The downstream basin itself is the largest wetland plain in Malaysia and the largest wildlife habitat in Southeast Asia, home to species such as saltwater crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, Asian elephants, and Sumatran rhinoceroses.

The best time to visit the Kinabatangan River is from April to October each year. Early morning and evening are the ideal times for birdwatching and spotting a variety of wildlife.
