Mabul Island

Mabul Island is located on the southeast coast of Sabah, Malaysia. In the 1990s, it was a small fishing village and gained fame due to its proximity to Sipadan Island. It has now developed into one of Malaysia’s most well-known resort islands.

Mabul Island is 15 kilometers away from Sipadan Island and covers an area of 20 hectares. It is an oval-shaped island surrounded by snow-white beaches, with colorful coral reefs at its northwest corner. Mabul Island enjoys the reputation of being the “world’s best muck diving destination.” The diverse marine life inhabiting the coral rubble and seagrass beds around Mabul Island attracts numerous diving enthusiasts who come to experience the vibrant and mysterious underwater world. The sandy seabed around its coral reefs and artificial reefs is home to a variety of astonishingly tiny marine creatures, including flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopuses, mimic octopuses, and short-armed cuttlefish, to name just a few.

Divers can spot various types of gobies here, such as the red antenna goby, blackfin goby, and gold-speckled goby. Large, clownishly colorful frogfish are also commonly seen. Moray eels, snake eels, and nearly the entire scorpionfish family make appearances for all to observe. Meanwhile, brightly colored juvenile damselfish perform their mating dances at dusk.
