Mermaid Island is located on the northwest coast of Sabah, Malaysia, and consists of three separate islets facing the town of Kota Belud. It is a renowned diving destination in Malaysia, famous for its large population of dugongs (Dugong), attracting visitors from around the world.

Mermaid Island is covered with tall, lush palm vegetation, featuring long stretches of pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Visitors can sip sweet coconut water while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. The island is home to a diverse range of marine life, most notably the endangered dugong. These marine creatures are often seen with half their bodies above water, nursing their young, which is why they are referred to as "mermaids" — hence the island’s name. The surrounding sea is an excellent spot for fishing and scuba diving. Sailfish and marlin are the prized catches for anglers, while divers come here to explore mysterious shipwrecks that hold many untold secrets. These wrecks have now become habitats for countless marine organisms and fish species, serving as nurseries for lionfish, scorpionfish, squid, glassfish, and coral.

Mermaid Island is also a well-known bird-watching destination in Malaysia. A variety of bird species inhabit the island, making it the only place in Sabah where you can spot the red owl. Additionally, visitors may see the pied imperial pigeon, Malaysian grey imperial pigeon, Nicobar pigeon, crested partridge, blue-naped parrot, glossy swiftlet, and frigatebird.
