The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve in Sandakan, Sabah. Opened to the public in 1964, it covers an area of 10,610 acres, most of which consists of pristine tropical rainforest. It is Malaysia’s first official centre dedicated to the protection of orangutans.

The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre provides visitors with the unique opportunity to observe orangutans up close and experience their natural habitat, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sabah. Home to between 60 and 80 orangutans—many rescued from logged forest areas, plantations, or those that were orphaned, injured, or illegally captured—the centre rehabilitates them through care and survival training before releasing them back into the wild. One of the most thrilling experiences for visitors is the chance to feed the orangutans. Feeding sessions are held daily at 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, during which visitors can offer bananas and milk-based meals. The orangutans have become quite comfortable around humans and calmly enjoy their tasty treats.

In addition to viewing and feeding the orangutans, visitors can also watch documentaries about these great apes. The centre is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, welcoming all visitors interested in orangutans.
