Sandakan is located on the east coast of Sabah and is the second-largest city in the state, with the second-largest economy. It is also the only city in Sabah where Cantonese is predominantly spoken. The city once attracted a large number of Hong Kong people to come and do business, and due to its similar appearance, it is known as the "Little Hong Kong."

During World War II, Sandakan was almost completely destroyed, so few historical buildings remain. However, several tourist destinations have been built since then. The Agnes Keith House is the residence where American writer Agnes Keith and her husband lived from 1930 to 1952. The Sandakan Crocodile Farm houses over 3,000 crocodiles and is the largest crocodile farm in Malaysia, making it the best place to observe these reptiles. Every year, visitors from around the world come here to see the crocodiles and related performances. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is Malaysia’s first official center dedicated to the protection of orangutans, offering visitors convenient opportunities to observe these primates up close and experience their natural habitat. Other attractions include the Sandakan War Memorial Park, Bohara Island, St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, Turtle Islands, British Tea House, and Puji Temple.

Sandakan is the most famous seafood city in Sabah, and tasting the freshest and most delicious seafood is a must. Signature snacks in Chinese restaurants in Sandakan include seafood springy dry noodles, pork springy dry noodles, and Cantonese-style fried noodles. Popular dishes include cheese lobster, spicy stir-fried crab, seafood crab soup, stir-fried vegetable shoots, and braised pig trotters.
