Kota Kinabalu, the capital and economic center of Sabah in eastern Malaysia. Formerly known as Jesselton. Located on the northwest coast of Borneo Island, it serves as a hub for rail, road, and sea transport, and is the gateway to Sabah. This vibrant capital city lies along the South China Sea, situated on a narrow coastal plain that stretches from north to south, backed by hills; its harbor faces Gaya Bay and is sheltered by small islands, allowing it to accommodate medium-sized sea vessels. The city hosts a historical museum, Gaya College, and Kent Teachers' College. The satellite town of Kampung Tanjung Aru is a popular seaside tourist destination. Not far offshore lie the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, while the eastern edge features the lush Crocker Range. This city’s scenic beauty, strategic location, numerous small eateries and markets, relatively prosperous economy, and the ocean breeze wafting in from the surprisingly rugged, rocky coastline leave an indelible impression on visitors.
