Shanxi Folk Museum

The Shanxi Folk Museum is located within the Confucius Temple at Wenmiao Lane in Taiyuan City. It was established on October 10, 2003, and is directly under the administration of the Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics. The Confucius Temple was built in the 8th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1882), covering an area of 31,000 square meters. The central axis largely preserves the original architectural layout of the temple, with structures arranged from south to north including the screen wall, hexagonal pavilion, Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall, east and west side halls, and the Chongsheng Shrine. The complex consists of three courtyards, and it was designated as a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit in 1996.

The museum has an exhibition area of 18,000 square meters. The 21 rooms on the east and west sides, along with the Dacheng Hall, are suitable for hosting large-scale exhibitions. The museum hosts frequent exhibitions throughout the year. In 2004, a total of 21 exhibitions were held, featuring cultural relics, calligraphy and paintings, photographs, models, and more. Notably, the “Fu Shan Calligraphy Masterpieces Exhibition and Works by Renowned Japanese Calligraphers,” the “National Painting Joint Exhibition,” the “Large Aerospace and Aviation Model Exhibition,” and the “Li Keren Cursive Script Exhibition” garnered significant attention and widespread acclaim in Taiyuan. During the 2005 Spring Festival, the museum organized the “Shanxi Traditional Arts and Crafts Expo and Large Folk Culture Event,” inviting folk artisans to perform and demonstrate onsite, adding vibrancy to the city’s festive celebrations. In 2007, the permanent exhibition “The Eternal Sage: Confucius Exhibition” was completed.

The museum houses a 2,500-square-meter storage facility for cultural relics, which can adjust temperature and humidity manually according to the specific needs of different types of relics, providing an optimal preservation environment. The museum has a staff quota of 36, with departments including the office, conservation department, exhibition department, education and publicity department, development department, and security division. In 1995, it was designated as a provincial-level patriotic education base by the Shanxi Provincial Committee and Government.
