Kōdai-ji is a temple of the Kennin-ji branch of the Rinzai sect, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Its mountain name is “Crested Peak Mountain,” and its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. It is said that after the death of the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598) during the Warring States period, his wife, “Kita no Mandokoro,” became a nun in order to pray for her husband’s peaceful afterlife, cultivate Buddhism, and find solace. Thus, Kōdai-ji was built.

Construction of Kōdai-ji began in the 11th year of the Keichō era (1606 AD). At that time, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542–1616), who unified Japan and founded the Tokugawa shogunate, provided substantial financial support to win over former retainers of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and stabilize the political situation. This contributed to the temple’s magnificent appearance. Although Kōdai-ji has suffered several fires since its completion, existing structures such as the Founding Hall, Reimeiden (Spirit Hall), Sōan (Umbrella Pavilion), Shōrin-tei (Time Rain Pavilion), and the Moon Viewing Platform have all been designated as Important Cultural Properties. The Suijin Pond garden landscape has also been listed as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The temple is also famed for its beautiful scenery, including lush bamboo groves, delicate cherry blossoms, and vivid autumn maples. Especially in autumn, the red maples of Kōdai-ji attract large numbers of visitors. Strolling along the serene paths, visitors can admire clusters and swaths of maple leaves interspersed with evergreen cypresses, creating a truly picturesque scene.
