Togetsukyo Bridge

Togetsukyo Bridge is located in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and is a vehicle and pedestrian bridge spanning the Katsura River. The area to the north of the bridge, Sagano, belongs to Ukyo Ward, while Arashiyama to the south is part of Nishikyo Ward. Crossing the bridge from the north and passing through Nakanoshima (Sagano Nakanoshima-cho) leads to the foot of Arashiyama, which is a popular spot in the western suburbs of Kyoto for viewing cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

It is said that Togetsukyo Bridge was named by Emperor Kameyama because “the moon arches like a bridge.” The scenery of the mountains and river reflected in one another as viewed from the bridge is an absolutely unmissable sight. With Togetsukyo as the centerpiece, the 200-meter stretch of the river both upstream and downstream is the Oi River; the upper section is called the Hozugawa River, while the lower section is known as the Katsura River. The area around Togetsukyo has been a favorite spot of Japan’s nobility since the Heian period. People flock here year-round to enjoy the pure beauty of cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant maple foliage in autumn, and snow-covered landscapes in winter. Beneath the bridge, the shimmering waters of the Katsura River are dotted with waterfowl, creating a scene akin to a heavenly paradise.

Due to the stunning scenery surrounding Togetsukyo Bridge, traffic congestion often occurs during the cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons. The local tourist office recommends using public transportation to visit.
