Arashiyama

Arashiyama is a tourist destination in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, renowned for its cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant red maple leaves in autumn. It has long been celebrated as “Kyoto’s most famous scenic spot.” Originally, the name “Arashiyama” specifically referred to the area on the right bank of the Katsura River, part of Kyoto’s Nishikyo Ward, while the opposite side, belonging to Ukyo Ward, was called Sagano. However, in recent years, many tourist guidebooks have collectively referred to the areas on both sides of the river, centered around Togetsukyo Bridge that spans the Katsura River, as Arashiyama.

To the northeast of Arashiyama lies Sagano, to the east it borders on Ozaku, Okazaki, and Uotani, and to the west lies Mount Ogura. The well-known Oi River meanders along its northern edge. Since the Heian period, Arashiyama has been home to many noble villas and frequently appears in historical tales and classical literary works. With large areas of wild cherry blossoms and maple forests along the Katsura Riverbanks that can be admired in both spring and autumn, it has long been one of Japan’s top tourist destinations.

In addition to its natural scenery, the Arashiyama area is also home to many famous Japanese temples and shrines, making temple visits another key highlight for tourists. Among these, the most significant is Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important historical landmarks include Nonomiya Shrine, which appears in Japan’s classic literary work The Tale of Genji, and Seiryo-ji Temple, which houses nationally designated Buddhist statues.
