Nanzen-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. It serves as the head temple of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Established in the fourth year of the Shōō era (1291 AD) by Emperor Kameyama, its first abbot was the Great Master Mukan Fumon. As the earliest Zen temple in Japan commissioned by the imperial family, it ranks above the Five Mountain Temples of Kyoto and is the highest-ranking Zen temple in Japan.

Nanzen-ji has faced near devastation due to disasters such as the fires of 1393 and 1447, as well as the Ōnin War. However, during the early Edo period, its close ties with the Tokugawa shogunate allowed for its reconstruction and flourishing, making it one of Kyoto’s most magnificent temples. Visitors standing atop the temple’s grand Sanmon gate can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city of Kyoto. Nanzen-ji is not only a renowned temple in Kyoto but also a famous spot for autumn foliage.
