The Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art is located in the scenic Okazaki Park in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward. Established in 1963, it aims to collect, preserve, and exhibit modern and contemporary artworks from Japan and other countries, as well as conduct research on them. It is one of the most renowned art museums in Kyoto.

Designed by architect Fumihiko Maki, the museum was completed and opened in 1986, offering an exhibition space of approximately 2,604 square meters. It primarily collects and displays artworks from the Kansai region and western Japan, with a focus on Kyoto. The collection actively features Japanese paintings, Western-style paintings, and other works by artists from the Kyoto art scene. The museum’s holdings include gouache paintings, Western oil paintings, prints, sculptures, handicrafts (such as pottery, textiles, ironware, woodwork, bamboo work, lacquerware, and jewelry), as well as photographs. Noteworthy exhibitions often highlight modern Japanese art, as well as modern and contemporary art from Europe and the Americas, allowing visitors to appreciate masterpieces by renowned artists.

The Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art features both permanent exhibitions showcasing selected pieces from its collection of about 6,600 works, which are rotated periodically, and special exhibitions that focus on both domestic and international themes unique to the museum. Additionally, it publishes a museum newsletter and organizes lectures related to its exhibitions.
