Kyoto Railway Museum

The Kyoto Railway Museum is located in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan. Established in 1972, it is a railway museum themed around steam locomotives. It was created to dynamically preserve steam locomotives designated as Important Cultural Properties and to make use of the roundhouse located at the Umekoji Locomotive Depot.

The Kyoto Railway Museum consists of two main parts: the exhibition hall and the roundhouse, each with its own unique features. The entrance of the exhibition hall resembles a typical train station ticket office where museum tickets are sold. Inside, there are static displays of steam locomotive-related parts, molds, and documents, as well as a screening room that shows related documentaries. The roundhouse, built in 1914, is a reinforced concrete structure. In 2004, part of its facilities were designated as National Important Cultural Properties. Maintenance of steam locomotives preserved for dynamic use is carried out here. Currently, the roundhouse houses 18 steam locomotives, seven of which are kept in working condition. In addition to the steam locomotives, two DE10 diesel locomotives used by Sagano Scenic Railway are also stored in the roundhouse.

The Kyoto Railway Museum is a comprehensive railway museum showcasing a total of 50 various types of railway vehicles. It is the largest railway museum in Japan and is a must-visit destination for those interested in Japanese railways.
