The Umeda Sky Building was completed in 1993 in the Kita ward’s Umeda district of Osaka, and is Japan’s first connected high-rise complex. In 1988, the original plan was to construct four towers and connect them into a single composite skyscraper, but due to practical constraints, only two towers were built and joined together to form the Umeda Sky Building. It stands 173 meters tall with 40 floors, making it the seventh tallest building in Osaka and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The Umeda Sky Building is a multifunctional entertainment complex. Its basement level houses a shopping street with a retro vibe that recreates the atmosphere of Osaka in the early 20th century. The ground level features an urban garden filled with blooming flowers that attract many visitors. Take the express elevator from the first floor to the top, where you’ll find a circular open-air observation deck called the “Floating Garden Observatory” and a café. From the observatory, you can enjoy a clear panoramic view of every corner of Osaka, and even grab a cup of coffee in the café—through the glass windows, the city’s beautiful scenery unfolds before your eyes.
